Some of the (still good!) more obscure Genesis games

From 1989-1993, the 16-bit revolution was in full swing, with the Sega Genesis, NEC Turbo Grafx 16, Super Nintendo, and SNK Neo-Geo (self-proclaimed 24-bit)

Some of the (still good!) more obscure Genesis games

Post by Darryl B. »

Not that people don't know what Star Control is, but that title was only in print for like a year or so. I was lucky to be able to get my copy of it from Funcoland years later, with the box, both sets of instruction books and everything. Heard there's several scenarios not on any other port too. A couple of ships turn too damn slow (even as compared to the PC version of ships that had slow turning speeds anyway, since I played that one on a friend's computer!), but it's one of the few games I can still play on my Genny over the years that I'm not sick of.

Fatal Rewind was a unique platformer/shooter/puzzle game too. Good ol' Psygnosis...

And not many people liked Sub-Terrania, but I did, part of the gameplay was similar to Gravitar, with the gravity and constantly losing your fuel. However, you had to rescue miners (kind of like Time Pilot, although they're on the ground though), shoot a lot of things and accomplish various tasks (one akin to the 80s computer game Thrust) to get to the next level...bit neato game, if you ask me.

Yours?

You'd be surprised how many people have never heard of Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey. I actually went to Funcoland and traded my SNES for a Genesis just so I could play Football when it came out.

I don't think it's as obscure, but I really liked El Viento and Traysia. The first game was rock hard, but it was great from beggining to end. Traysia was too easy, but it was a memorable adventure.

Games I like that I would consider to be outside the main stream:

Starflight (Space Adventure)
Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday (Sci-Fi RPG)
Championship Pro-Am (16 bit port of RC Pro-Am)

Those are the only games in my collection that are in my opinion somewhat off the radar, but I guess that depends on what one considers "mainstream".

HEY! Good catch on Buck Rogers, that was a bit of a different RPG/turn-based game.

Starflight...whoa. Spent literally a year just collecting data on all the planets in all the freakin' solar systems!

Star Flight. Ah, the memories, the time spent keeping records of things in that game. The feeling of accomplishment when I realized that one race was speaking in binary. So many cool memories from that game. Which reminds me of Star Control 2 on 3D0 (I loved that game too for pretty much the same reason I liked SF on Genesis, but it was simpler). Has anyone tried Star Flight 2 on computers?
Blades of Vengeance, another EA release, I believe programmed in the US or Europe (definitely has that 'not programmed in Japan' feeling to it. Great little fantasy adventure game.

Rocket Knight Adventures! Totally fun and I've been playing it for about a week now when I have time. Someone told me it's a Sonic rip-off but I don't see it. Sonic has no jetpack, does not fight AT-STs and the music here does not compare (as far as melodies, the soundtrack on this is excellent!).

Yeah, I've got that actually. More of an 'upgrade' rather than a true 'sequel', if you ask me. Not bad though.

Rocket Knight Adventures came out during the time that all publishers were gunning for a mascot to carry their company much like Sonic and Mario (anyone remember playing Ocean's Mr. Nutz? Awesome game). The problem is, most people that didn't live through that period of gaming, those looking back now, are quick to drop that "rip-off" title on RKA and other games from back then. Those of us that lived through that time, we know better.
I wonder why EA never released Star Flight II on Genesis or SNES or any other home console (SF1 probably didn't sell well).

That's a possibility on the latter, it didn't stay in print for very long, even though it was a pretty decent update, it ran faster and the interface was smoother and all than the clunky PC version.

About the only downside was the very few ruins with funny messages in them though! :D

Hey, were you able to figure out any of the binary dialog from that one Starflight probe?

Yeah, I think it was based on 8-bit binary (every 8 characters making a letter or something that you could decipher clues from). I will check around and see if I can find some FAQs for it as I am sure that others have done way better at tranlsating it than I did.

I liked Wings of Wor, I had fun renting that and recording a bit of it's music once :)

DJ Boy was alright, and reviewed in an issue of Zap! fanzine in 1992 I think. I didn't give it a very good rating, because it was just too easy for me. However, now that's a blessing, with so much less time on my hands.
One burning question that will remain with him until his dying days....."Was my victory really worth the price I had to pay?"
