How in tarnation to do Genesis The Immortal level 5 secret?!

From 1989-1993, the 16-bit revolution was in full swing, with the Sega Genesis, NEC Turbo Grafx 16, Super Nintendo, and SNK Neo-Geo (self-proclaimed 24-bit)

How in tarnation to do Genesis The Immortal level 5 secret?!

Post by Darryl B. »

First off, for those that don't know, The Immortal had a bit of a blend of being an action RPG as the player's wizard wandered around eight levels of a dungeon, interacting with people, trying to solve a mystery with puzzles and being a hack and slash game as well, since the player would engage in combat with enemies, having many gruesome full-screen deaths. This came out when people were screaming for a way to rate video games (before the first of at least two systems were created), which this game somehow flew under the radar, as whenever I read article after article back in the day about it, I kept on going 'why don't they mention The Immortal?' Usually they mentioned Mortal Kombat, maybe Night Trap (or maybe NT came out after the first ratings system began, I don't recall. No, I don't think so. Well anyway...), but never this.

The game had several damn hard parts too; not a lot of replay value there, just mainly to show off to your friends on how gnarly it was.

Now, it had a pretty famous secret for its NES version, where the player goes down a hallway at one point in the game and meets digital representations of the programmers in a room. There were a few differences between the PC, NES, Genny (no spider level on the NES version vs. Genny), and Atari ST versions. I read on the Wikipedia article that supposedly all versions have this secret.

Anyone know how the hell to trigger the damn thing?! I'm pretty sure it's on level 5, since there's a hallway there that seems to have no function at all. I've got the separately-sold cluebook of it, which it has a very funny hint in it of when the player's character enters the hall, who could have sworn he heard a voice say "PREPARE TO MEET YOUR MAKER" :D It makes me wonder if it was taken out at the last second; the cluebook shows something fishy in a corner, but I've tried using all my fireballs up, holding up the amulet at every single torch, shooting at the corner and one at the opposite end of the corridor (that one has a suspicious dot on a floor tile), and other things, but I can't figure it out. Can't find anything on the net about it either; again, either it was taken out at the last second (and it's reference not changed in the cluebook) or it's a bitch to figure out, some of the creator's Easter eggs are some of the hardest to find, like on Zany Golf too.

Oh well, at least it got me to pick it up and do the deal for the alternate ending, which I never knew it had one, over 15 years later, so I got to see that, at least :)

It's a gnarly game with those grisly deaths, you might want to check out a few YouTube videos if you're not familiar with it :D
