Sega 8-bit Magazine

Post by BaronSFel001 »

Sega Challenge (for the first 3 issues) and Team Sega Newsletter (for the final four) was short-lived but a very nice complement to the library of a Sega gamer in the late 1980s. Today, they seem to have all but vanished. Ter used to have a complete set, but they were claimed by natural causes many years ago. I am not necessarily looking for the actual physical issues, but as a part of the Sega fan community I know it would be very much appreciated if someone were able to contribute good-quality scans if anyone happens to possess any of these.

No, Retromags does *not* have these (though they probably would if someone contributed).

Hey, thanks for joining! For a little backstory, here is the original letter you sent me that caught my attention right away:
BaronSFel001 wrote:My name is Scott, and I am just your simple hardcore Sega fan. I plan on rebuilding my game and console collection as soon as I start earning a viable income, but there are other mementos which are not quite as accessible as some of us would like them to be. Specifically, as you likely noticed already, I am referring to your collection of both Sega Challenge/Team Sega Newsletter and Sega Visions. I have gone over your list and collaborated with other sources, and have thus verified that your collection of both is complete. I am not asking you to part with any of them (I know I would not if our roles were reversed), but I firmly believe that there are some legacy aspects of gaming that need preservation one way or another. On that note, I am asking you to consider providing the Sega fan community complete high-quality scans of your Sega magazine collection. Actually, come to think of it, there is no need to bother with Sega Visions: 1) the retro magazine community is on the verge of completing that collection, and 2) most are so thick you would be forced to damage them in order to come up with good scans. As I recall, the Team Sega Newsletter is fairly thin, and I agree with your assessment that it was done in several ways better than its successors. Not to mention that it is those small 7 issues that are the hardest to acquire nowadays.

Let me know how this could possibly work for you. First, let me know if you are willing and/or able to do so in the first place, then we can discuss details. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

SEGA!!

P.S. Though I am a member of some, I am not officially representing any specific Sega fan communities with this request. If you would rather officially work this deal with a community, I can give you a referral to one or two whom I am sure would be interested.
My answer was a bit disappointing:
Ter wrote: Hello, and thanks for your interest in the newsletters. I regret to inform you that I wrote that list in the late 90's, and had a flood in 2001. Unfortunately, most of the Sega Challenge/Team Sega newsletters suffered severe water damage. I do, however, still own them all and would be willing to scan what I can. Here's what I have:

Issues #1 and #2 have damage so severe, they won't even open. These two issues are completely stuck together.

Issue #3 also has severe damage. The center slightly opens.

Issue #4 has some damage. Some stains, but the pages open, although it's a bit stiff.

Issue #5 has the least damage. Some small stains, but everything feels normal and nothing sticks together.

Issue #6 is similar to issue #4 and #5. However, the front cover is somewhat stuck to issue #7 (but not totally).

Issue #7 is not good. Each page is is stuck, but they all partially open, unlike the first two.

Let me know what I can do for you. Please join my forums (link below) and we can make a discussion in there. Just crate an account, and reprint your original e-mail and I'll reprint mine. From there we can take it step by step, and I'll help you and take it from there.

All the best,
Ter
Anyway, all is not lost. The first three issues are gonna be hard to repair, but the rest may be scanable. I'm gonna give it a try and see how it goes. While they are not mint, the rest are readable. Check back here later, I will try to scan a test page now:

Do you want it in .pdf? Here is issue #4's cover in .pdf. If the quality is good enough, I will scan the rest.

All things considered, that is not bad - on a listing, I would designate it as an "Acceptable" condition. If you can pull things together like that, especially on the first three, this still ought to go a long way. They may not be archival quality, but that ought to be forgiven if they are complete and readable, considering how rare they are.

Issue #1, #2, and #3 aren't possible yet, as they are in the process of being repaired. Here is the complete issue of #5. It's not perfect, but it's readable. If it's ok, I will scan the others. Let me know.

I am curious as to how exactly you are repairing them. I am pretty sure you know what you are doing, but I would like to keep track.

Very readable, very satisfactory (at least to me). By the way, did that include the back cover (I cannot tell)?

Oh yes, the back cover is there. I will try and get the rest scanned tonight.

Been extremely busy at work the past few days. I'll start scanning more issues Monday night after work.

No rush. Just do whatever is necessary as carefully as you can, however it takes.

Let me dig around the archives and see if I can find some of these issues. I had them when I was a kid, so the question is whether or not I still own them.

Issue # 5 is scanned and now up. Here it is, where all the scans will now be neatly placed in a simple html I just wrote up.

And that was one with a stuck front page. If you saved this one so well, there ought to be hope for the others.

I figured the time was right to present this project to the Sega community. My contact is Chakan, who runs segafans.com. He is most excited and very willing to host and distribute whatever we come up with.

It is proving very difficult to scan the rest. Issues # 1-3 are in the process of being freeze dried, and this could take months with no guarantees. Issue #7's cover has just been scanned, but do to water damage each page is still partially stuck at the bottom. I'll see what I can do with this, it's not too bad.

I just acquired a very good conditioned issue of #3, so expect it to be scanned as soon as it arrives. Now, all that needs to be done is get a scan of issue #1 and #7. I am working very hard to obtain them, so let's hope for the best!

Oh yeah, a scan of issue #1 was finally found and put up, check it out!

The high quality, excellent conditioned issues of numbers 2 and 3 that I just bought arrived in the mail today. I scanned issue #2 (replacing the issue that I found on Sega Fans) and issue #3. Now, all that's left is issue #1 and #7. Covers of every issue are on the page for easy access. Enjoy!
