Numbers radio stations...whoa

BS about anything you like in here, as long as it's not TOO controversial

Numbers radio stations...whoa

Post by Darryl B. »

Wow, pretty interesting thing I just picked up on, even though they've been around for nearly 100 years! Copy and paste job from me:

Numbers radio stations are strange high frequency radio stations of unknown origin that broadcast what sounds like artificial or sometimes inhuman voices. These voices simply repeat various numbers or letters and can be heard in various languages. Eerie musical clips can also be heard in the broadcasts.

The exact purpose of numbers radio stations remains a mystery, as most governments will not acknowledge them. Although, in the UK it has been stated that people should not be listening to them because they are illegal. This only managed to spark further interest in these ghostly stations.

Numbers radio stations have been broadcasting practically 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for nearly a century that we know of. It is said the these broadcasts are in a code that is virtually unbreakable, even by the most talented people or the most powerful computers. Samples of them can be found on the web and there are many theories of what they could be. It has been reported that the activity of these stations has increased since the early 90′s.

The most popular theory is that of espionage and spies. Some people believe that these stations are used to communicate with spies from different countries. Others think that the purpose for these stations is much more elaborate and that a government conspiracy is at hand. Which leads to the question, “What can be so big that it has been secretly talked about through unbreakable codes for nearly a century?” It’s no wonder that peoples imaginations go wild and new theories about number radio transmissions are born every day.

And this isn't some ridiculous conspiracy theory to roll your eyes at, upon further reading of this subject I found several people who had been busted and jailed (the 'Cuban 5' several years ago) for having one-time pads (used for decoding the broadcasts), along with radio equipment and all in their home for espionage. So even though some of these stations are just arguably sometimes broadcasting mundane information, sometimes they're not.

Here's the first ever numbers station vid I ever checked out (it gets a bit creepy at about 1:22), and I also did my own fake numbers station broadcast that can be found on my my channel, plus I even started my own forums in regards to them (one of the very few on the entire net, I think), although there's almost no one there yet though. I'll see about getting some publicity going with Proboards later this week (yeah, it's them, so you have to deal with their PG-13 crap when posting, unfortunately).

Yeah, I've gone a bit off the deep end with these :D And I don't even have a short wave radio yet to try to find them myself! (Another gadget I'll have to get at some point; oh darn!)

Wow, Darryl- I've never heard of these. That's wild! I've got a shortwave, I'm going to see what I can pick up.

Very cool!

Yeah, there are places online that tell of active stations, might want to check around for them.

The easiest to find is 'the Buzzer' from Russia, a continuous droning noise that's been going on for over 20 years now. Actually I think it's not a numbers station for the most part, but supposedly occasionally the drone will stop and some garbled numbers can be heard in between the tones before they start back up again. Numbers station or not, it's one of the many bizarre radio oddities out there.

Thanks, I appreciate it :) I'm going to see about promoting it through Proboards sometime this week to see about getting it's name around, through support and all. I know you can promote it and bump it up every 12 hours on their support forums. Plus I need to find out how to get it out on internet searches so it'll show up when people do searches on 'number radio stations' and the like.

BTW, numbers stations usually do broadcasts on the hour or half hour, that's one tip in trying to find them, by scanning around and listening in during those times around the world.
