Atari Flashback's

1977-1983 were some of the best years ever, and brought us the 2600, 5200, Intellivision, Colecovision, Vectrex, and many others

Atari Flashback's

Post by TwinChargers »

Just curious if you guys own either one of theses things? The first one isn't as popular with the purists since it uses the Nintendo on a chip to run the games off of, where the 2nd one was basically a 2600 without a cartridge port. The original had roughly 20 games on it, and the second one had 40. Great fun for those who might not have an Atari but would like to see what its all about.

The reason I bring this up, is because of the possibility two new Flashback's coming out sometime in the (hopefully near) future. I know a few of you are also on AtariAge, and on there, there is talks about a newer FB similar to the second one that will have a different batch of games on it. The other FB, will be a portable 7800 that would have instead of a cartridge port, a place to put in a SD cards and play your games from there.

This is very great and exciting news for Atari fans, just thought I'd give you all the heads up if you didn't know this already.

So what's this SC card thing, for you to play ROMs on it or something?

Yeah I heard another one might be in the works, lets hope it doesn't get butchered, although they did a bit of a better job with the second Flashback in general, didn't they?

I think that you'd put the ROMs of games onto the SD card and transfer them onto your Flashback portable.

The quality of the system isn't my concern at all. Atari got Legacy Engineering to make up the FB2 and its quality was second to none. I believe that they also had a hand in the first FB but had an insane time retraint put on them.

Heres a link to what might be what the FB3 might look like-

I have the Flashback 2. I like it a lot, and think I paid like $20 shipped in box for it sometime last year. Not much to complain about for that price, except the lack of a cartridge port I guess.

As for the rumored upcoming Flashback's, you never mentioned the one I am mostly looking forward to, the Flashback Portable. It's everything anyone can want. Joystick ports, USB port, TV out, and a cartridge port, but who even needs it since it has an SD card slot so you can load hundreds of ROMs on it.

Yeah but you can mod the thing so it does accept cartridge games, or am I thinking of something else?

I mentioned the portable multiple times... I even posted a link to where you could see someone talking about it. In that link you'd see that it doesn't have a cartridge port, and it also (unfortunately) doesn't have TV out.

Wow, can't believe I missed that, all apologies. I can live without the cartridge port I guess, but I really prefer a TV out.

Hey, its cool.

I think a lot of people agree with you in thinking it needs TV out. Exspecially since it has joystick ports on the back, how are you supposed to hold this thing and play with a Joystick, much less try to have 2 players playing it this way? Seeing how they have now made it into a 7800 portable, hopefully it wasn't the final design and fixed that problem.

Yeah, I think that design is about a year old, who knows if it's even their final design. As far as I know, there's still no time date for a release, not even a guesstimate. Do you think we'll see it in 2010?

The Man himself Curt told me that that particular design is on the back burner, but it's ready to go to a manufacturer as soon as an investor invests in it. I would if I could, but can't find that extra 14K I had lying around :D j/k.

I'm definitely looking forwad to any of the new Flashbacks and love the FB2 I have. The FB1 has been traded away for the moment, but I'll get another one. yes, the FB1 was rushed and with a bit more dev time it would have been totally great, and it was fun in it's own right. Yeah, the purists had a fit over it not being true, but it was still rockin. I'll definitely be getting another one.

Huh, that's weird, suddenly there's news of an Atari Flashback 2+ to be released next month in limited quantities and at limited retailers.

It's going to have 40 games, 20 new sports games, and backwards compatibility for all previous Atari controllers (!).

Well, THAT'S a first.

That's nice, but is it worth getting for me since I already have a FB2? I just wish they could find an investor already for the portable.
