Favorite Game Genres

Post by TwinChargers »

Just to see what kind of gamers we have here, what would you consider your favorite genre of games? Big fan of RPG's? How about sport titles? First Person shooters your kinda thing, or are you a bigger fan of the 2D side scrollers? How about arcade ports or racing titles? What are some of your favorites?

I'd say I probably have more arcade port titles than anything else. I love arcade compilations. I can't get enough of those plug-n-play games with all those ports (although the redundancy of them isn't something I exactly care much for). I like the fact that they can be played in short bursts, and that they are available for pretty much every generation you can collect for.
These pretzels are making me thirsty!

Ever since the original Resident Evil my favourite genre is Survival Horror.
I can give or take most Sport titles, Some Racing is cool and FPS is all right. Not into RPG or much of anything online.
Oldshool gaming, some people will never "Get it"

I'm really into single-player rpg's, don't care for mmorpgs. Also like sidescrollers, shmup's, and adventure games. I'll play just about anything tho if its good.

I'm not even sure I can pick a favorite. I like RPG's, FPS, Survival Horror, car racing, sports, gun games, shoot-em-ups, and of course, anything classic. If I had to choose a least favorite genre, I'd say learning games or puzzlers.
One burning question that will remain with him until his dying days....."Was my victory really worth the price I had to pay?"

I go more towards action titles, specifically Run n' guns, Shoot/Beat em ups, Top Down Overhead shooters, " Lightgun " on the rails shooters, etc. I guess if it has a gun and you shoot people, count me in!

I greatly prefer 2D games over 3d environments. It seems like even if a game was crappy the fact that it was a sidescroller still made it playable.

When I was a kid, my favorite genre was RPGs. Now, I don't know if it's my attention span or what, but I don't like really involved games. I like to be able to sit down and play and not do a lot of puzzle solving and questing. Give me a controller, point me towards the enemy, and let me annihilate them. I don't think I'm any dumber than I was as a child, but I just want to play. If I want deep, involved strategy I'll try to figure out my tax bill.

Amen to that :)

Heh on the last part!

I have mentally ill parents that I had to move back in with, and it's taken years to fix their legal messes (luckily I'm down to the last one though!). I haven't exactly had money to spare for several years now, so even getting a tv has been kind of pointless (since airborne mold in a house can screw all kinds of things up too, like electronics, since tvs aren't exactly expensive), so I went like four years without one. I was just able to snag a small one in the last year from a neighbor who was tossing it out since it's built in vcr didn't work any more. Fine with me!

The difference between my Genesis/32X/CD games and the good ol' Atari 2600 and 7800 (when I went back to playing them) is that too many of the first batch of games involves writing a password or keeping a game on pause for a bit to nap, since I have chronic fatigue. The Atari batch has been more enjoyable, since a lot of those games can be fun but not take a long time. So I've enjoyed going back to the Atari more, rather than the Sega stuff (although both systems have great games). But of course I have my Vectrex too, those are just the main ones, tv-needed wise.

Anyway, I like one of the very earliest genres, the bottom of the screen shooters, I have so many Space Invader-type games it's not even funny (and I still need more!). Regular shooters, FPS', puzzle games are good too, especially ones that combine genres, like the Genny's Fatal Rewind, a shooter/platformer/puzzle game. RPGs are ok too.

Yes, I'd almost be like the guy in your avatar if we had basements here in Houston! (It floods too much for those to be practical!) Thanks!

Give me a good platformer (just about anything Mario), RPG (currently playing Final Fantasy 1 from GBA on my PSP) or a great strategy game (Front Mission on SFAM translated playing on PSP). That about covers it. Years ago, I was into fighters, well, Street Fighter 2 anyhow.

Since the original Left 4 Dead is my favorite genre is a Survival Horror. I can give or take most of the titles of Sport, part of racing is cool and the First Person Shooter is absolutely right.
