AVGN- Angry Video Game Nerd discussion thread

Post by Rob »

Well, it seems like nowadays every forum has a thread about the AVGN, and not just game forums either. SO rather than deprive us, I figured I'd start the required discussion.

For those that don't know, James Rolfe started making short films when he was a young kid, and is still making them. A few years ago he did a video review of Castlevania II that was pretty funny, and he distributed it amongst friends, who encouraged him to make more. After developing the character of the Angry Nintendo Nerd (later, the Angry Video Game Nerd or AVGN) he's reviewed about fifty games so far, and is one of the most viewed and active Internet Celebrities of the last few years. He sticks with mainly crappy games from the eighties, and usually tears them a new asshole.

One of my personal favorites is the NES Accessories video. I also like the Sega 32X/CD reviews and the Coleco/Intellivision reviews.

His most recent review is Milon's Secret Castle. It was a bland game, and the review itself was kind of dull to me. It seems that unless the game is really horrible, James really forces the acting and comes off as less than genuine.

He's still the best game reviewer on the planet IMO, and I really hate the massive wave of imitators and copycats that have sprung up in his wake (Irate Gamer, anyone?)

LOL. I just finished watching the Milon's Secret Castle episode about 10 minutes ago.

I only found out about AVGN a month ago when I was looking up Top 10 best "insert console here" games on YouTube, but I've been a huge fan since. Whether he's acting or not, I find his reviews hilarious. I've probably watched his Ghostbusters and Nintendo Power reviews a hundred times. But I agree, some of his reviews are better than others. Gotta love the theme song though. :sonic:

I'd never even heard of AVGN until I saw this post. Just watched a few of the videos and I have to say that they are pretty entertaining

The first one I saw was (I think) Friday the 13th, back in 2007 or so. That one's still one of my favorites, simply because I played the shit out of that game as a kid, and never really understood what I was doing. The Atari Porn episode is the second one I saw.

I've been a Nerd fan for over two years. I really love his episodes. I prefer the NES reviews. When he reviews 2600 or other oldies, you can tell he didn't play them the first time around.

I like The Irate Gamer sometimes. He's not that bad, and was the first major copycat. How about The Happy Nintendo Nerd?

The HVGN is my favorite of all the copycats. He reviews some of my favorite obscure games. Check him out over on retroware tv : http://www.retrowaretv.com/home/HappyVi ... fault.aspx

Well I like a lot of games on the Game.Com but it does have a few stinkers and I think it would be cool if he would do a review on this system. Heck I even have a couple duplicate games and a extra system I'd donate for him to do it. I love his movies, they are hysterical

I really didn't like is Atari 5200 review. So the system sucks because his controller had to be broken? In over 11 minutes, he didn't review one 5200 game.

Yeah, that was kinda off. I have never had a 5200 but I have heard the controllers are prone to malfunction, but that doesn't mean the system sucks just the controllers. I thought it was pretty funny that he used the storage area for his beer :) but again why does the fact that it had an area to hold stuff make it bad? and also the fact that it was big? I thought it was the games that made a system good or bad? But anyways generally I do like him and have watched all his episodes now :)

In all fairness, the 5200 review perfectly summed up my frustration with the system. I've got two stock controllers, one trac ball, and the Wico stick and none of them work. (Well, the Wico works, but it plugs into the stock controller, which you need perfectly working in order to start a game, so it does no good on its own). I've replaced the flex circuits, replaced the action buttons, and nothing works. I've got about thirty 5200 games sitting on my shelf unplayed because Atari couldn't make a decent joystick. If they made it compatible with the 2600 joysticks there wouldn't be a bad thing said about the 5200 except for its size, which frankly is a bit much.

I just found the strangest game rom for Genesis and it reminded me of the review of sex games AVGN made for the 2600. The games called Street Fuckers and you fight other dudes by beating em with your penis and shooting em with jism. Just too wierd!

I've got two NES roms like that- "Bizarrio" and "Pussy City Pimps".

"Bizzario" is a hack of the original SMB where all the goombas are giant penises, the gold coins are syringes, the koopa troopers all have afros, Mario has a pompadour, some of the other enemies are replaced by giant bongs, and when you get a fire flower you shoot sperm instead of fireballs.

"Pussy City Pimps" is a hack of River City Ransom where everything is pornographic. The sign in front of River City High now reads "horny orgy HS" and when you attack somebody they go "Shit!" "Fuck!" instead of "Barf!". Also, all the sticks and clubs are replaced with giant dildos, and when you go into a shop to buy something the girl in the store offers you different sex acts.

Very, very weird.

Also, there's "Afromario", a hack of Mario Bros, where Mario is black and he and all the turtles coming from the pipes have giant afros.

I liked his Zelda CD-i games reviews. I also like his rant about the ColecoVision AC adapter, although mine was more practical. His themed reviews are awesome, too. FRANKEN-NERD!

Plumbers Don't Wear Ties

I thoroughly enjoyed that game, and it appears I was the only one! At the time I bought it, in 1997, I had just taken my first plumbing job. I also was in love with Jane! :naughty:

Right now, he is doing a Castlevania special, and it's flat-out amazing. He is up to part three, and it's still not finished. Looking forward to him reviewing castlevania symphony of the night. Nice to see him reviewing good games (well, for the most part the series was good) for a chance. :simonwhipleft:

Ha ha ha! I had that crappy game! It sucked so hard. And what's funny is that I loved the 2600 version which had all eight events, yet both of the 8 bit versions only had four events and they both sucked!

I know it's late but I loved the Castlevania retrospective. That brought back some memories.
