Vector game fans?

Post by Darryl B. »

Just wanted to see who else liked the "wireframe" vector games, like Battlezone, Tempest, Major Havoc (the latter two are my favorites), Space War(s), Star Trek, whatever.

Of course there's the Vectrex too, but there's also been several good web games as well that emulate the vectors, like Vector Runner that I posted about last night in the Flash Games section, Tank Hunter (review I did), being like Battlezone, but having several different kinds of tanks, annoying hovermines, several kinds of powerups, and missions to accomplish and all, and more. Fun stuff...

I love Vector games, and it would be my dream if someone released a color vector system, expensive or not I would buy it in a second (or as soon as I saved up, heh). My favorites are probably Asteroids and Star Wars.
One burning question that will remain with him until his dying days....."Was my victory really worth the price I had to pay?"

^What, you mean the Vectrex, or just vector games in general?

Along the same boat, I've thought it'd be nice if a new version of the Vectrex were released, maybe with a slightly larger screen, all the non-licensed original GCE games built in (Hyperchase, Fortress of Narzod, C. Chasm, they could probably get away with calling Star Trek "Star Ship" like they did in Japan, etc.), more RAM, a faster processor, etc.

And since it wouldn't need any of the heavy memory and other stuff used for today's systems, it probably wouldn't even cost that much, except for the vector monitor, probably.

An interesting game for me (though it seems to be line drawings on a raster scan image) is Vib Ribbon.

I don't know very much about it, but it looks pretty cool on the videos you can watch.

Oh yeah, thanks for that, I had only heard a couple of vague mentions of that on the net, but didn't really know anything about it, since that game wasn't released here in the States. I probably would've been hanged for not including that one...

Speaking of which--although I really, really shouldn't mention this, case I missed a lot more and have to spend a lot more time updating (again!)--I've actually written an all-encompassing (aside from what games I've missed) vector article for The Atari Times website. It's gigantic--15 pages WordPerfect, last time I checked--and I keep on finding stuff and adding it. Some of the stuff would arguably not be "vector", but it's in regards to vector games, their raster ports (Asteroids for various gaming systems, Omega Race, Gravitar) and clones, so anything 'wire frame' is fair game, pretty much (I just found out about Red Alarm, I think it's called, for the Virtual Boy [not real familiar with that system], so I added that one, it was close enough, I felt).

So I'd ask if anyone knows of any games I left out to let me know and I'll give you a credit at the end of the article (let me know if you want your real name in it or if your handle of "Vectrexmad!" is fine...speaking of which), however, rather than wasting time asking and posting about if I have __ game included in the article, it'd probably be better if I sent my "Cliff's Notes" version of the article along (although that alone is also many pages!), cutting out the descriptions and just leaving manufacturers, games and/or platforms. Just don't do anything with it (post it online anywhere), since TAT owns the rights to it, I guess you can say. That way you can just look and see from there, everything's divided into sections (from the earliest Lunar Lander game from the early 1970s to 2009 with Vectex homebrews, I-Phone apps and all), and there's also like a million Atari compilations too with their vector games included...just one of the many things you have to keep in mind!

Just don't bother tracking down a bunch of online vector games though--I mentioned a few--but those, along with gaming sites, come and go. I'll eventually have a page for that on my future vector gaming forums though :)

Thanks for any future help in advance, although that'll mean more work for me!

Daryl,
that article you are writing sounds really interesting. If you want to pm the list to me or print it on this forum its fine for me (but I think emailing it to specific people you have more guarantee that you suddenly won't see it popping up on someone else's website.) I know of a few more obscure Vector games, but you probably got them on the list already.
Using my handle is just fine, but can you put it as VectrexMad! ?

Sure, no problem. I wasn't going to put it up on this site though, I'll see about PMing it to you.

Thanks for the offer!
