Were you ever in a video gaming magazine?

Post by Zap! »

I was. I had the high score for Monster Lair for the Turbo Grafx CD-ROM, and was in EGM from early 1991 to the September 1991 issue (my score was beaten, but I eventually would retake the lead on the exact same day Rudy Giuliany would beat David Dinkins for the mayor's race in NYC, don't ask me how I remember this). Zap! fanzine was also reviewed in Electronic Games when the magazine briefly made a comeback in 1992 to 1993. I believe it was reviewed in the April, 1993 issue, but I have never seen the issue (anyone have one or know where I can get one?). So how about you guys?

The closests to anything like that was back in the 80's in my AMIGA DAYS (ah great times) Publc Domian and shareware was huge and many Amiga Magazines ran ads for PD software houses, tons of software on 3.5' floppy for not much more than the cost of the media and shipping. Anyway, some of the bigger PD houses had various collections, different thems, content etc. They also traded which was great, basicly they would trade you one on one, so if I sent them 50 disks of software I compiled (the idea was to pack the disks with as much content as possible) they would credit you the same amount and ship you back selections of your choice! The cycle continued as you would gain new titles, create new compilations etc, etc. Well one of the biggest PD houses I think was called 17bit PD or something, they must of done well as they would take out full page ads in magazines like cuAmiga. It was an UK publication and to my delight the bottom of their full page ads would give mention and greetings to their top traders and compilers, at least a few times I would see my name ROB DAVIAU from CANADA listed in their greetings and that absolutely thrilled me, a little thing but being young, into Amiga and see my name in a full page ad in an UK magazine totally made my day. On top of that my compilations were among some of thier most popular! Cool.

I have some of the early issues of the second run of Electronic Games and will check and see if I can find the one where they reviewed Zap. Also, what was your name displayed in the EGM issue? I may be able to find that too.

Terence Micharoni was the name (still is, heh), and you can fid me in several issues around mid 1991 in EGM. Zap! was reviewed in the April 1993 issue of Electronic Games. If not April, then May. Do you have the issue? Sadly, I have never seen it but am looking for it, or at least a scan.

Any updates on this?

Hey Ter, I have good news. I found one of the reviews of your fanzine. I see there was another fanzine that was named the same but with an extra 'p' any connection with them?

I will scan the page for you ASAP. I apologize for taking so long in getting this to you, I have been extremely busy preparing something major at Retromags and I hope that you and the many many others that I have promised to find stuff for will understand, at least after the announcement is made.

I will get to that scan for you quickly though.

What issue was it in? Was I right, April 1993?

No relation to Zapp, BTW. :)

Oh Ter....I have something for you. My apologies for taking so long (I rescanned it several times and this is the best of the scans-which didn't come out that great but I hope you like it). I plan on debinding the issue later so that I may get better scans of other things in that issue and will make sure to get you a better version then.

Thank you so much for that. It's amazing that this is the first time I have read that, 16 years later. What issue was that, April 1993? I'd like to get the mag on eBay but I'm not 100% positive on the issue.

I am glad I could help with that (had it not been for me joining RM I would have probably unloaded most of these magazines on ebay already). I apologize again, for it taking me so long in getting that to you (I ended up getting tied into several things, the interview being the first that I can officially release, the others could be bigger-depending on how old you are).

Yes, it is the April 1993 issue (I keep the issue information in the name of the picture in case my folders get fragged and everything gets dumped into one-had Windows do this 3 times now). Let me know how it goes for you getting it on ebay. You can have my copy (not in mint condition as you can tell from the scan, there are a couple of damaged pages) for dirt cheap if you want it ($5 for everything, shipping and all if you want it).

I see you mentioned you were in EGM a lot (letters column?). If I have time, I will check out the mags we have on RM for your name and post the page scans for you to get.
