Re: Was Ghostbusters for the SMS the first password game?
This has got me interested to the point of doing some research. If we're talking strictly consoles, then Ghostbusters missed it by a couple of months. Ace magazine puts the SMS release of Ghostbusters as the summer of 1987, which could have been June-August. Castlevania hit the U.S. in May 1987. Her...

Re: Anyone into emulation?
I'm a proponent of Emulation on the Dreamcast. That's kind of what brought me back into classic gaming years back. I can say that it's not the same thing as playing the games on their original format, but it is better than playing them on a PC. At least you're using a console with a genuine Sega con...

Re: Sports Titles
Man, I love RBI Baseball. The NES titles were a blast. I also like any baseball games following that template of play. Having said that, I absolutely LOATHE most sports games. I'm like Ter, I like the old school NES era "fun" sports games. I don't care for any of the 2600 or Intellivision ...

Re: Was Ghostbusters for the SMS the first password game?
Dragon Quest came out on the Famicom in 1986, and used the password feature. The US version that came out in 1987 used a battery save.
I'm sure there was a 2600 game that used a password, wasn't there?

Re: Best books on Video Game History?
If you want in-depth, try Steve Kent's The Ultimate History of Video Games . That to me blew Game Over out of the water. Another good one, told from a Japanese perspective, is Chris Kohler's Power Up . Minus a butt load of points for being factually inaccurate in a number of instances. From a semi-a...

Re: Pre-Computer Space electro-mechanical games
Well, see, now we're getting into semantics. Sure, there's no question those are Arcade games, but so are pinball, air hockey, love testers, those bowling games where you try to sink the ball in different rings, etc. Arcades have been around since the turn of the century. Back then they were nickelo...

Re: Longest game from start to finish
I stand corrected :wav: Chakan on the Genesis didn't have a password or save, and I toiled for three or four days trying to beat that son of a bitch. I completed all the levels of the first realm and thought I was done (this was day two) only to find that I had another frigging world waiting for me!...

Re: Game Boy Player
Nor does it play some Game Boy color cartridges (ie, the clear cartridges). As for the Game Boy Player for the GC, it doesn't play homebrews, GB Video carts, or the Pocket Music cart. It will play about 99.9% of all commercial games (its played every one I fed it). However, some of the really old GB...

Re: Longest game from start to finish
Yes, the standard version does. The extremely rare European NTSC version does have a password feature, but unlike the US version it doesn't give you the passwords between levels, and none of the US codes work on it. I couldn't find any online, so basically I had to beat it in one go, between meals, ...

Re: What's the rarest classic game you own?
Atari 2600: Swordquest: WW, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Beat Em and Eat Em, the Evil Dead II homebrew, a couple of others I can't think of right now that are rated 4 and 5 at Atari Age. I used to have Chase The Chuckwagon but I traded it for a Vectrex 3D Imager and light pen. Vectrex: Mr. Bo...

Re: Famicom and Disk System
I think their intent (Nintendo's) was noble in the beginning, to try to avoid the shovelware that ruined the whole industry just a few short years prior. But then, like labor unions, :flipoff: they got greedy and tried to monopolize the games industry in the US. Really, they were like the Mafia in t...

If you ever, uh, decide to "donate" that Atarimax cart, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.

I have an FC Twin and a Yobo. Of the two, the FC Twin is much more reliable and less buggy. The only games it didn't play well were the Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune games for the SNES.

When I was a kid, "3D graphics" meant you pressed "Select" on your NES controller while playing Rad Racer and you put on a pair of cardboard glasses with a red and blue lens!

Re: Genesis or SNES guy
Well, if you notice the games I bought, I had a definite violent streak in my gaming. I think, now, MK plays better on the SNES, but the gore and fatalities are what made me buy a Genesis. As for SFII, this may be considered heresy, but after playing the Hyper/Turbo versions for so long, I can't pla...

Re: Playing games online
Count me in. I've never played any games online. Nor do I play PC games, unless you count classic computers. Sega sent me a free browser when I had the Dreamcast, and I went online with it a couple of times using the DC mouse and keyboard. It was all pretty cool to do back in the late nineties, but ...
